Rehearsals and Testing

Dates had been fixed for 21st, 22nd and 23rd April 2021 (11am – 1pm UK Time) for what had been proposed to be a series of ‘Open-Door’ rehearsals jointly available, ‘live-screened’ at Shanghai Yue Opera House and ‘live-streamed’ to Stage@Leeds.

Shanghai Yue Opera House star performer Wang Rousang has been working with UK-China producers, directors and digital teams to develop the one-actor performance ‘Song of the Female Textile Workers’ with the process of first full rehearsals intended to be live to view.

Due to potential issues regarding some of the proposed documentary footage to be displayed, this live to view process was unfortunately cancelled.

Rehearsals have been conducted and aspects of cross-cultural theatre production are being explored along with compatibility and connectivity of digital materials and technical support. However, despite amendments made to presented footage, the rehearsals can not be publicly shown until Shanghai Yue Opera House are satisfied that they pass the scrutiny of the Cultural Bureau censorship panel.

The rehearsal was conducted at the Opera Theatre at Shanghai Textile Museum and filmed by partners from Shanghai Theatre Academy. The rehearsal footage is currently in the process of being shown to the Cultural Bureau and, once passed, it will be made available to a UK audience and shared on Stage@leeds website.
