An Evolving Script (June 2022)

Hi all!

Just a quick update this week, to best let you get on with kick-starting your summer plans!

This month will see the ramping up of production on the Song future performance, as our friends and colleagues at Human and Megaverse begin building the virtual environments in earnest. To avoid complications further down the line, though, the precise details of the performance - the locations, interactive objects, script - need to be completely finalised first.

It is with this in mind that the script, Haili Ma, the Principal Investigator and the lead script writer has already undergone many rewrites and redraftings from has been passed on to our digital partners for review. We've already learned a lot from their feedback, on the nature of an interactive digital performance script, and how its needs and ideals vary from that of a more traditional medium, such as theatre or film.

To be engaging and enjoyable for the user, the dialogue needs to be digestible and bite-sized, and the interactions intuitive and not onerous to carry out. What this means practically, is that some of the more exposition-heavy parts of the script need to be pared back, and the tone lightened and made more friendly, to try and make it feel more like Lu is having a real conversation with the visitor.

We are, however, ultimately looking to put on a performance that tells a story, and as such the overall message of the script must remain intact. There are, therefore, compromises to be made in order to meet the needs of all concerned.

We are planning a workshop style meeting next week at Human and Megaverse's base in Sheffield, and the team will continue to review and update the script until that date. It is our hope that at that meeting, the script - and indeed the other finer details of the performance - will be approaching something of a final version.

Alright, that's it for now - I'll keep you posted on all of our ongoing news, so look forward to more updates soon, and enjoy your summer!
